New York scored four times in the first inning, three on Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s first home run, but Pittsburgh refused to accept the obvious version of the night.

Jared Triolo’s two-run double and Nick Gonzales’ RBI single cut the lead to 4-3 in the second. Esmerlyn Valdez then hit a two-run homer in the third, turning a four-run Pirates deficit into a 5-4 advantage.

For a few minutes, Pittsburgh had authored the road comeback every young contender wants. Then Chisholm walked back into the scene with the editing rights.

The Moment the Game Broke

Chisholm’s second homer came in the bottom of the third, with Cody Bellinger aboard. One swing changed 5-4 Pittsburgh into 6-5 New York.

José Caballero followed with a two-run ground-rule double. The Yankees did not merely answer the Pirates’ five-run run; they built a four-run inning before Pittsburgh could enjoy it.

That sequence separated the teams. The Pirates had needed two innings to climb out of the first hole. New York needed one bottom half to place them in another.

Who Actually Showed Up

Chisholm finished 2-for-4 with two homers, two runs and five RBI. Caballero added two hits and two RBI, while Austin Wells also collected two hits.

The bullpen preserved the work. Angel Chivilli, Tim Hill, Brent Headrick and Fernando Cruz combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings after Ryan Weathers left in the fifth. Cruz recorded the final four outs and struck out three.

This was not a clean starter-to-closer procession. It was New York using its loudest bat to reclaim the lead and then asking four relievers to make the noise stop.

The contrast was sharp: Pittsburgh generated five runs against the starter, then managed only two hits after he left. New York’s relievers did not need another offensive cushion. They kept the Pirates from bringing the tying run into a late-inning pressure spot and turned the third-inning reversal into the final version of the score.

The Blame Queue

Braxton Ashcraft allowed eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits over three innings. Pittsburgh’s offense gave him a fresh lead in the top of the third, and it lasted only long enough for Chisholm and Caballero to take their turns.

The Pirates committed two errors in the first, which helped New York open the game with four runs. A comeback can cover early damage. It cannot excuse immediately giving the lead back.
