The Damage Report
The Golden State Valkyries beat the New York Liberty 79-60 at Barclays Center, completed a 3-0 season sweep, and held New York to its lowest scoring total of the year. Golden State led 21-19 after one quarter and never gave the Liberty a comfortable route back into the game.
Cecilia Zandalasini scored 20 points, Gabby Williams added 16, and Veronica Burton finished with 13 assists and zero turnovers. The Valkyries did not need one player to carry every possession because the entire rotation kept presenting another answer.
New York’s title standard spent the evening reading the fine print.
Where the Wheels Came Off
The second quarter built the gap. Golden State won it 21-11, turning a two-point lead into a 42-30 halftime advantage. Zandalasini scored 14 of her 20 points before halftime, while the Valkyries kept the Liberty from turning good looks into a normal offensive rhythm.
The separation continued after the break. Golden State opened the fourth quarter with six straight points to move ahead 65-47, and the game stopped asking whether New York could find a run. It started asking whether the Liberty could find enough possessions.
People Who Understood the Assignment
The shooting numbers explain the distance. Golden State made 13 of 33 three-point attempts; New York made 7 of 31. That 18-point gap from beyond the arc accounted for nearly the entire final margin, but the Valkyries also won the assist count 23-14 and the rebound count 49-42.
Burton’s 13 assists without a turnover made the offense feel especially organized. Golden State also received 18 bench points from New York’s 0, a depth advantage that turned a great start into a sustained problem instead of a one-quarter trick.
What We Are Pretending This Means
Golden State is not required to treat every August win as a championship certificate. The Liberty remain a contender, and New York’s 60-point night is a result to diagnose rather than a permanent identity.
But the season sweep is real, and it has a shape. The Valkyries held New York to 70, 67, and 60 points across three games, the three lowest scoring totals of the Liberty’s season. That is not random noise anymore. It is a matchup with a filing system.
The Desk Has Ruled
Desk ruling: Golden State turned depth into distance by making New York defend five players, chase the three-point line, and survive a backcourt that did not give away possessions. The Desk’s Lead Protection Grade is an A (100): the Valkyries’ largest lead matched the final 19-point margin.
The Liberty wanted a title-standard night. Golden State handed them a very organized stack of paperwork.
