Utah Put the Corners to Work
Utah did not wait for the match to become open. The Royals made the restarts do the opening.
Nuria Rábano served a sixth-minute corner to the back post, where captain Kate Del Fava headed Utah in front. In the 35th minute, another corner sequence eventually returned to Rábano, whose ball found Tatumn Milazzo for the second goal.
Two defenders had scored before halftime. North Carolina had conceded control of the score without conceding control of the ball, which is a particularly unpleasant way to spend a home match.
The Answer Lasted 10 Minutes
Evelyn Ijeh pulled the Courage within 2-1 in the 55th minute after Utah lost possession in its defensive end. For a brief stretch, North Carolina had a route back into the game.
Then Utah earned another corner.
Cloé Lacasse recycled the sequence and delivered the cross that Mina Tanaka headed in during the 65th minute. The lead returned to two, and the Courage’s comeback window closed almost as soon as it opened.
Mandy McGlynn made five saves as North Carolina kept pushing. The Courage took 22 shots and put six on target, while Utah finished with 13 attempts and eight on goal. Volume belonged to the home side. The best repeated mechanism belonged to the visitors.
Every Goal Shared the Same Address
The Desk’s Dead-Ball Goal Share was 100 percent. Utah scored three times from corner-kick sequences, then added Lacasse’s stoppage-time penalty after she was fouled in the box.
That fourth goal made this the highest-scoring game in club history. It also completed the argument: Utah did not need a parade of flowing moves when every restart looked like a prepared attack.
Rábano’s two assists gave the Royals a dependable service point. Del Fava and Milazzo attacked the first two deliveries, Tanaka finished the third sequence, and Lacasse supplied both a cross and the final penalty. The responsibilities moved around; the pressure source never did.
North Carolina had more possession, more shots and enough late pressure to keep McGlynn occupied. Utah had the sharper plan whenever the ball stopped. The Courage kept winning territory and then watching the scoreboard move in the other direction.
The Completely Unbiased Verdict
Desk ruling: Utah turned dead balls into a complete offense. Four goals, four restart sequences and a club record on the road is not random finishing. It is a scouting report delivered in capital letters. North Carolina found 22 shots. The Royals found the one part of the match the Courage could not defend.
