Dallas Owned the Opening Script

Dallas led 31-28 after one quarter, 59-44 at halftime, and 80-72 after three. For most of the night, the Wings looked like the team deciding how much pressure the game could hold.

Then the fourth quarter arrived and the script went straight into the shredder.

Washington did not need a miracle possession. It needed a string of good ones, and the Mystics found them. A 20-point Dallas lead became a four-point Dallas loss because Washington kept converting the moments when the game stopped being comfortable.

Austin Made the Comeback Physical

Shakira Austin finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds, giving Washington a reliable center of gravity when the game demanded more than perimeter answers. Jessica Shepard added 22 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. Alanna Smith contributed 21 points and 11 rebounds.

That combination explains why the comeback became real. Washington did not ask one scorer to create an escape hatch while everybody else watched. The Mystics kept producing pressure at the rim, on the glass, and in the next decision.

Dallas still had its own complete line: Shepard’s 22 points and seven assists were not enough to save the Wings from the final period. The problem was not a lack of talent. It was the sudden absence of control.

The Desk Metric: Collapse Index 100

The supported Collapse Index finished at 100. Dallas’ largest lead was 20, the final margin was minus four, and the Wings lost the closing period 24-12, with the loss penalty applied.

That number is intentionally blunt. A team can lose a close game without having its night rearranged. Dallas had its night rearranged.

The standings will remember Washington’s win, but Dallas will remember the sequence. The Wings had enough time to protect the lead and enough offense to finish the job. What disappeared was the possession-by-possession calm that turns a big advantage into a routine result.

The Desk Has Ruled

Washington did not steal this one. The Mystics took it from a team that had already started writing the victory speech. Dallas built the lead; Washington built the ending. The Wings now have to prove the first 30 minutes were the real team and the last 10 were the interruption.
