New York Built a Very Large Alibi
The Liberty led 49-32 at halftime and 67-41 after three quarters. Those are the kinds of numbers that usually let a contender spend the fourth quarter discussing the next game.
New York instead spent it defending a legal case brought by the Los Angeles Sparks.
The Liberty won 85-81, but the final period belonged entirely to Los Angeles. The Sparks scored 40 points, cut a 26-point deficit down to four, and made New York’s win look less like a statement than a document that survived a last-minute rewrite.
The Cushion Came From Real Basketball
Sabrina Ionescu scored 20 points, and Jonquel Jones grabbed 18 rebounds for New York. The Liberty shot 42 percent, controlled the glass 41-36, and did enough through the first three quarters to turn every later Sparks basket into a countdown.
Los Angeles had Rae Burrell’s 28 points, plus 16 from Dearica Hamby and 10 points and 11 rebounds from Nneka Ogwumike. The Sparks did not stumble into the fourth quarter. They finally found the pace and shot-making that had been missing earlier.
That is why the comeback matters even in a loss. Los Angeles did not discover a miracle. It discovered a functioning offense, then ran out of game before the discovery could become a win.
The Liberty Let the Warning Get Loud
New York’s first three quarters were efficient enough to make the ending optional. The fourth quarter made it mandatory. Los Angeles won the final period 40-18, turning a comfortable margin into a possession-by-possession referendum on whether the Liberty could create one clean stop.
New York created just enough. The result held, but the shape of it will travel. A team with championship expectations can survive a late avalanche, but it cannot pretend the avalanche was decorative.
How Much Should We Overreact?
The Desk’s Fourth-Quarter Competence graded F after New York was outscored by 22 in the closing period. That is not a claim that the Liberty failed to win. It is a claim that they finished a winning game with the kind of control a contender should not need to borrow from a 26-point cushion.
Los Angeles deserves credit for turning the fourth quarter into a fight. New York deserves the win and the film session.
