Byars Opened the Argument

Trinity Byars put San Diego ahead in the sixth minute, redirecting Kimmi Ascanio’s service past Kansas City goalkeeper Marisa Jordan. The league-leading Wave arrived ready to make the match uncomfortable before the home crowd had settled into it.

San Diego took 12 shots and put six on target. Kansas City managed nine shots with three on target. The visitors did not dominate every passage, but they kept producing the more direct threat.

Kansas City Flipped Nine Minutes

Croix Bethune equalized with a one-touch finish in the 52nd minute. Nine minutes later, Bethune assisted Temwa Chawinga, whose left-footed goal gave the Current a 2-1 lead.

The comeback was fast, clean and convincing. Chawinga’s goal was her ninth of the season, and Kansas City appeared to have turned a difficult first half into a statement home win. For 28 minutes, that interpretation was allowed to breathe.

The Last Word Belonged to San Diego

Byars scored again in the 90th minute to complete her brace and pull the Wave level. Kansas City had changed the entire match after halftime, but San Diego’s most dangerous player changed it back before the final whistle.

The 2-2 draw left the Current with the frustration of losing a late lead and the Wave with proof that first place can survive an uneven road night. San Diego did not need to win the full second half. It needed one more finish.

The Desk Metric: 66.7% of the Target

San Diego produced six of the match’s nine shots on target, a 66.7% share. Byars converted two of those six.

The metric helps explain why the late equalizer was not a random interruption. Kansas City owned the sharpest nine-minute stretch, but the Wave created twice as many efforts that required a save or became a goal. The pressure remained available for Byars to use.

The Desk Has Ruled

Desk ruling: Kansas City’s comeback deserved applause right up until Byars reclaimed the microphone. Bethune and Chawinga changed the match in nine minutes; San Diego’s shot quality and Byars’ finish made sure the league leaders still left with the last word.
