The Damage Report

Milwaukee beat Chicago 4-3 in 10 innings because the Brewers refused to let the ninth inning become a memorial service for a perfectly good season. The Cubs led 3-1 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Then Christian Yelich singled, Jackson Chourio homered, and American Family Field remembered why this team keeps making October plans.

The Brewers had already received six-plus strong innings from Jacob Misiorowski, who allowed one run and struck out nine. The offense gave him a narrow game. The late innings gave everyone a small cardiac event.

The Moment Everyone Knew

Chicago scored twice in the top of the ninth on Carson Kelly’s double, putting Milwaukee one out from a regulation loss. Yelich’s pinch-hit single kept the line moving, and Chourio drove a two-run homer into left to tie the game.

That was not the whole comeback. It was the permission slip.

In the 10th, Luis Lara lined a walk-off single into left field. Milwaukee’s two-run ninth-inning comeback had already turned the Cubs’ advantage into a tie; Lara turned the tie into the first 90-win season in baseball.

Who Actually Showed Up

Misiorowski held Chicago to one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings and reached 104.5 mph with his fastball. Chourio supplied the loudest swing, while Lara supplied the one that made the box score stop moving.

The Desk’s Ninth-Inning Comeback metric is two runs. That number is more useful than pretending the Brewers dominated. They did not. They were down to their final out, found one baserunner, and then asked Chourio to erase the entire problem.

Chicago finished with seven hits and no errors. Milwaukee collected 12. The Cubs played a clean, competitive game and still left with the baseball equivalent of a receipt marked “please try again tomorrow.”

The Desk Has Ruled

Milwaukee became the first team to 90 wins, but the number arrived in the most Milwaukee way possible: a tidy start, a late mess, and a teenager ending the argument after everybody had already begun writing the postgame complaint.

The Brewers did not win the ninth. They reclaimed it.
